windsurfing holidays in El Yaque - Margarita
Much of Margarita’s landscape mirrors Texas, scorched desert, with a cactus, barren scrub landscape. On the northeast coast the beaches and countryside are typically Caribbean with white beaches and waving palms. In the centre of this unique island is a 3000ft mountain with heavily wooded ravines, where tropical palms grow alongside mahogany and eucalyptus trees, decorated by a riot of colourful flowering shrubs. To the west, the sparsely populated area of Macano is joined to the rest of the island by the isthmus of La Restinga.
The south offers the best wind conditions which is where the village of El Yaque is located. With the airport only a ten minute journey away and Porlamar, the capital, a 45 minute taxi ride, this once small fishing village, is now a bustling windsurf and kitesurf haven.
El Yaque, sits on the edge of a white sandy beach with palm trees blowing in the wind, fringed by flat shallow water. Partly eroded by some strong currents, this spot has become one of the top winter destinations in the Caribbean. The variety of local bars and restaurants offer excellent value for money and are all within easy reach of your accommodation.
With enchanting scenery, superb wind conditions, and unbelievably flat water this is the perfect spot for slalom and freestyle windsurfing, with intermediates also benefiting from shallow warm water training conditions. Plus for kitesurfing, a very real chance to perfect the early techniques, as well as for the experienced to practise new innovations and tricks in the specially designated kite zones.
