windsurfing holidays in Tarifa - Spain
Tarifa town itself is a picturesque collection of Moorish buildings and cobbled streets, only 30 minutes from the airport of Gibraltar and a 2 hour drive from Malaga. Tarifa stands on the exposed eastern edge of an open bay of white sand, a huge crescent beach nearly 11 kms long.
This destination offers conditions to suit every level of windsurfer, from the more sheltered conditions to be found at Las Dunas near Rancho Valdevaqueros, to the challenging conditions in front of the Hurricane Hotel, more suited to intermediate and advanced windsurfers. Winds in Tarifa can be very strong, sometimes reaching Force 8 on ‘big days’, these are caused by cyclonic action of high and low pressures which interact to give the Levante, blowing out from the Med giving flatter conditions, and, the Poniente from the reverse direction when the Atlantic swell sweeps on to the beach, to the delight of wave sailors. Generally the sea is flat inshore, with windchop further out to sea, the sailing area is a huge expanse of water, flanked by the curving bay, with a few rocky patches and a strong current, the only hazards. With the wide choice of flights, airports and shorter travelling times, make this venue suitable for long weekend trips as well as more conventional holidays.
